How to calculate the ascendant

What is the ascendant?

The ascendant (rising sign) is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment and place of birth. Unlike the sun sign — which depends only on the date — the ascendant changes about every two hours and cycles through all twelve signs in a single day. That is why it needs a precise birth time.

Ascendant vs sun sign: what's the difference?

The sun sign describes your core identity, who you are at the center. The ascendant describes how you present yourself to the world and meet your environment: it is the 'mask' or the doorway of the birth chart. Together with the Moon sign, they form the triad astrology uses for a first reading of character.

The Midheaven (MC)

Along with the ascendant we also compute the Midheaven, the highest angle of the chart. The MC points to public and vocational direction — career, reputation, visible goals. It is another point sensitive to the birth minute.

Why the exact time matters
